The themes of this year’s Kingston Festival of the Voice follow those of the Cultural Olympiad, two in particular being heroism and young people. St Nicolas, hero of the fourth-century church, emerges dramatically from the pages of Britten’s score, striding across the centuries to tell his story, some of the events of which are recounted
with the help of children’s voices. There is also scope for audience participation in two well-known hymns.

Divertimento in B flat K137
The C minor Mass and the Solemn Vespers are among the finest of Mozart's choral works. The Mass, written in celebration of his marriage, is richly influenced by baroque structure and the musical language of Bach and Handel. In both works the composer's irrepressible exuberance is never far away. The Divertimento is a short early piece for strings.

The Triumphs of Oriana was compiled in honour of Queen Elizabeth I. Handel's anthems adorned the Coronation of George II as did Parry's that of Edward VII. A Garland for the Queen and Britten's opera on the life of Elizabeth I celebrated the Queen's Accession in 1952. Walton wrote marches for the coronations of both George VI and Elizabeth II.
