Bach Mass in G Minor
Haydn Te Deum
Vivaldi Concerto Grosso Op3 No11
Mozart Coronation Mass
Before the monumental B minor Mass of his later years, Bach had previously written four settings of the shorter Lutheran Mass, highly attractive works full of wonderful music. Haydn’s concise and splendid Te Deum shows him at his most positive and joyful. Vivaldi composed over 400 concertos; Op3 No11 features a solo group of two violins and cello. Mozart’s bright and optimistic Coronation Mass is one of his most popular choral works, and a cornucopia of different styles.

Beethoven Missa Solemnis
Originally intended to adorn the enthronement of an Archbishop, but not completed in time for the ceremony, this greatest of Beethoven’s choral works was written during the same period as the Ninth Symphony. It is both a monument to faith and an expression of triumph over personal hardships which increasingly affected him at this time. Ranging over a gamut of moods and feelings, it is by turns philosophical, dramatic, colourful and profoundly beautiful.

Saturday
4 JUNE 2011 7.30pm
St Paul’s Church, Augustus Road, Wimbledon Park, SW19 6EW
Dvorak Mass in D
Durufle Requiem
Dvorák, an early supporter of Czech nationalism, set out in this heartfelt work to express his delight in the gentle beauty of the Bohemian countryside. Duruflé’s sublime masterpiece developed from a projected series of organ meditations on the traditional plainsong melodies of the Requiem Mass; although similar in shape to Fauré’s famous setting, its musical language is highly original and richly expressive. Both works are given in their original versions with organ accompaniment.
